If pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria find a hold in the oral cavity, the risk of dental disease such as gingivitis (inflammation of the gum) and periodontal disease (loosening of the teeth) increases.

How does my pet develop dental disease?

Our pet's mouth contains a whole host of bacteria, both good and bad, as well as other microorganisms. We call this the oral microbiome. Over time, without proper care, more harmful bacteria start attaching themselves onto the gums and teeth, leading to an imbalanced oral microbiome.

Once enough harmful bacteria attach themselves, they start colonising and form a thin layer of biofilm, which we commonly know as plaque. Within hours of plaque forming, minerals from the saliva start calcifying it and transform plaque into calculus. Calculus is much harder than plaque and requires professional treatment under anaesthesia by vets.

Plaque and calculus provide a much rougher surface for harmful bacteria to attach to and this creates a vicious cycle. Your pet's gums start to become inflamed as a natural response of the body fighting off the harmful bacteria. This results in the dental disease gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis eventually becomes periodontitis, causing receding gums and loose teeth.
